Don was raised in Zebulon, attending school at Zebulon Elementary and Zebulon High (when there was one). He graduated with a class of 69 as valedictorian before majoring in journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He immediately graduated college and went to work for the local newspaper, then known as the Zebulon Record. He was staff writer, then sports editor, then managing editor as the newspaper became known as the Eastern Wake News. He spent 18 years covering mostly sports, following three high school athletic programs along with three area recreation programs as well as the Carolina Mudcats minor league baseball franchise.
After ending his newspaper career in 2007, he happily accepted the opportunity to work for his beloved church. He considers it a "real blessing from God" to be on staff serving this congregation, the community needy, the ministers and, of course, the Lord.
Don also teaches adult Sunday school community classes, acts as coach of the softball team, remains a member of an off-site Bible study group born out of the ZBC "It's Time" program and holds a program ministry council deacon position. Wife/gymnastics coach Cris sings in the choir (beautifully, he insists), while 7-year-old Dason and 2-year-old Rykin are active (sometimes overactive) participants in the childrens' programs.
A self-professed television expert hooked on DVR technology, Don enjoys Tar Heel sports obviously and making new friends. But his favorite times are hanging out with family or buddies just chatting and more often than not eating.
Call Don for benevolence concerns, education issues, fellowship opportunities and K-3 activities --- or anything else you might need. He's here to help.
